Definition:
Posttraumatiskt stressyndrom (PTSD) är ett tillstånd som kan uppstå efter allvarliga eller långvariga psykiska trauman.
Förekomst: 
Exponering för traumatiska händelser varierar mellan olika länder och populationer och därmed varierar också förekomsten av PTSD. Livstidsprevalensen har internationellt uppskattats till 2–9 %.
Symtom:
Ihållande symtom kan vara påträngande återupplevelser av händelsen (flashbacks), undvikande av situationer som påminner om traumat, känslomässig stumhet och avflackning samt överspändhet med sömnsvårigheter och irritabilitet.
Kliniska fynd:
Normala kliniska fynd.
Diagnostik:
Inga särskilda undersökningar behövs. Skattningsverktygen Primary Care PTSD Screen (PC-PTSD) och Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL-5)  kan vara till hjälp.
Behandling:
Psykologisk behandling med systematisk exponering för traumat bör erbjudas. Läkemedelsbehandling är ibland aktuellt.
