Definition:
Appendicit, akut inflammation av blindtarmen.
Förekomst:
Vanligaste akuta gastrokirurgiska tillståndet. Cirka 1,3 per 1 000 invånare i Sverige opereras årligen pga appendicit. 7–10 % av Sveriges befolkning beräknas genomgå en operation på grund av appendicit under sin livstid. Högst incidens ses i åldersgruppen 10–29 år.
Symtom:
Smärtan utvecklas i typiska fall under 12–24 timmar. Den startar centralt i buken med smärtvandring till den högra nedre kvadranten. Feber och kräkning är vanligt. 
Kliniska fynd:
Fynd man ser är en subfebril patient som helst vill ligga still. Ömhet ses i nedre högra kvadranten med muskelförsvar.
Diagnostik:
CRP är i regel förhöjt. U-HcG bör tas hos kvinnor i fertil ålder. CT och ultraljud är aktuell bilddiagnostik.
Behandling:
Behandlingen är kirurgisk appendektomi som laparotomi eller laparoskopi.
