Meningit

Definition:
Akut bakteriell meningit (ABM) är en infektion i hjärnhinnorna och tilhörande CNS-strukturer. 
Förekomst:
Årligen diagnostiseras under 100 fall i Sverige. Fallen är oftast sporadiska. 
Symtom:
Klassiska symtom är hög feber, huvudvärk och nackstyvhet, men dessa kan också saknas.
Kliniska fynd:
Vid meningokocksjukdom kan petekier ses. Fyndet är förenligt med sepsis. Eventuellt ses nackstyvhet.  
Diagnostik:
Lumbalpunktion är den viktigaste diagnostiska åtgärden. 
Behandling:
Viktigaste behandlingsåtgärden är omedelbar empirisk och därefter riktad adekvat antibiotikabehandling. Allvarliga utfall är vanligt vid ABM.
